Facts on Poverty

20% of private art income seems very little to donate when you consider that:-

  • 98 (approx AUD$225) will save a child’s life

  • 16,000 children die every day from hunger related causes

  • There is more than enough food in the world to feed its 6.55 billion people yet 8 million people die each year because they are too poor to stay alive

  • According to the United Nations it would cost US$195 billion each year to stop almost all deaths from hunger and disease

  • At the 2002 Monterrey Conference the 22 most developed nations pledged to work towards each giving 0.7% (less than 1%) of their national income in international aid – i.e. for every $100 earned the country gives 70 cents in aid - this would raise the $195 billion.

  • Sweeden, Luxenbourg, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark have reached their goal.

  • Finland and Belgium will have reached their goal in 2010 – France Spain & Ireland by 2012 – UK by 2013 – Germany by 2014 – Austria Portugal Italy and Greece by 2015

  • The US, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand & Switzerland HAVE NO SCHEDULE. These 6 countries are all democracies – all that is necessary for them to reach the 0.7% goal is for enough of their citizens to show their support.
